  • Closing of the throat
  • Hives (irritable rash)
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or tongue
  • Severe stomach pain

Suboxone Side Effects

Due to potential Suboxone side effects, this drug should not be taken simultaneously with the following medications, unless by doctor’s orders.

  • Naltrexone or rifampin

Benzodiazepine such as:

  • Alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), clorazepate (Tranxene), lorazepam (Ativan), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), oxazepam (Serax), triazolam (Halcion), temazepam (Restoril), estazolam (Prosom), quazepam (Doral), or flurazepam (Dalmane)
  • Cimetidine
  • Phenothiazines (chlorpromazine)

Macrolide antibiotics such as:

  • Erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E.E.S., E-Mycin, others) or clarithromycin (Biaxin)

Azole antifungals:

  • Itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral)

HIV protease inhibitors such as:

  • Indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir) or saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), rifapentine (Priftin), or rifabutin (Mycobutin)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)

Barbiturates such as:

  • Phenobarbital, mephobarbital (Mebaral), and others

Narcotic pain medicine (Codeine, Morphine, and other opiate drugs).

This is not a complete list of all Suboxone side effects and contraindicated medications. Consult your health care provider concerning other medicines, vitamins, or herbals that you may use.

Suboxone can cause constipation, provoke dizziness, and impair thinking. It may also amplifies the drowsiness effect of other drugs, including:

  • Antidepressants
  • Alcohol
  • Antihistamines
  • Sedatives (for insomnia)
  • Other pain relievers
  • Anxiety medicines
  • Muscle relaxants.
